Every year in late autumn, my mother in the village has to hurry to harvest her crop of cabbages before the first frost. Meanwhile, all the "Aunties" and "Uncles"—people of my parents' generation—in the cities are hurrying to buy up cabbages before the price increases. Watching the great enthusiasm with which the city folk "stock up cabbages for the winter" leaves this country boy with an indescribable feeling of warmth.
I like to take my cabbage for walks across the city. Weaving through noise and clamor of the streets and lanes, I feel as if my cabbage and I have initiated a dialogue with the strange world around me, that I have set in motion an exchange between me and the customs of a worldly society that make me uneasy.

——Nathaniel M. Stevens
